eyes of the tundra


A scene from St. George Island in the Bering Sea. Tundra surrounded by the ocean - a place swept by the relentless wind, so open that human voices and bird cries dissolve in the void between the sea and the sky. Bright-colored flowers bloom during a short-lived summer, seals bark, waves crash fiercely on the rocks, children roam around free, and Arctic foxes scurry between the rocks and the village houses.

Smoking Mirror


I've been for a long time intrigued by the exotic non-humanness of the Mayan and Aztec pantheons, as much as by the stories of the Tungus-Manchurian (Nanai, more specifically) folklore. These are worlds populated by big cats, frogs and reptiles, with adventures involving smoking mirrors and drums, strange dreams and planting magical creatures into your chest to battle spirits that are stranger still.
